A 10/22 dilemma .?

I am looking for a first rifle after deciding the muzzloader was too hard to shoot and clean. My friend has a 10/22 carbine, I like the way it shoots, but I don't want to pay the 230$ for something I'm supposed to work on. The other .22 rifle is the Remington 597, it's not as classic looking with the realtree APG stock, but I've heard it beats any 10/22 out of the box at only 160$. The reason I say the 10/22 is 230$ is the onethat I like has english walnut stock, Stainless Steel, and 22inch barrel. Which one would you take?

One vote for the 10/22. Also, you don't HAVE to do work on the Ruger, there is just an abundant aftermarket accessories available for the 10/22, so you can if you wan't to.
