Yes, the assassin Gavrilo Princip was a member of the secret Black Hand society, which he joined after he moved to Belgrade in 1912. This society was pushing for independence of Bosnia-Herzegovina from the Austrian empire, so that these Balkan regions would be free to become part of Serbia.

Princip was one of three men sent by Dragutin Dimitrijevic, the chief of the Intelligence Department in the Serbian Army and head of the Black Hand, to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Political assassinations were not exactly rare at the time. Both the U.S and Russia had even lost heads of state to assassins. And there were several others.

Austria used the Archduke's assassination as an excuse to settle an old score with Serbia. So Austria went to war with Serbia. Then Russia went to war with Austria. Then Germany went to war with Serbia and Russia. Then France went to war with Germany. Then Britain went to war with Germany. All those declarations of war happened within 10 days of each other.
