yugioh a card that refers to "when a face up monster select as an attack target"?

can i use the cards with this effect when an opponent monster attacks a face down defence position monster?

For example can i use wall of thorns when an opponent monster attacks my face down plant type monster such as lord of poison....

sorry, but no. You can not activate wall of thorns in that situation because the targeted monster ( the monster being attacked ) is face-down and the card ( Wall of Thorns ) specifically states that the monster being attacked has to be face-up. There are cards that work like wall of thorns but the monster does not have to be face up such as mirror force, or radiant mirror force if the opponent has 3 or more attack position monsters.
