Does anyone know of a flying insect that looks like a cross between a horse fly and a yellow jacket?

My mom and I walk everyday and I have a problem with this flying insect attacking me. It looks like a cross between a horse fly and a yellow jacket. Bug spray won't get rid of them. They don't bother my mom only me. I have tried different shampoos, not to take my shower before I walk, wearing different color clothes, and nothing helps. It is beginning to affect our walks. Anyone have any idea what it is or how to keep it from attacking me?

Sounds like it might be carpenter bees.

The eat through wood, and make their nests inside the eaves and attic space of your home. They can be VERY difficult to get rid of, since many bug sprays WON'TY KILL them, and they are hard to "bomb" since they get into your house theough a very smll hole. if they are in your hosue, you will probably need to call an exterminator.

They ALSO live in other dead woods, like dead trees and tree stumps. ANY of THOSE along your walk path???
