If people "fall away" from their faith, is it wrong to say they never "believed" in the first place?

Can those of you who "fell away" from your christian beliefs and became atheists honestly tell me that you ever truely believed in the first place? Or where you just pretending to believe like so many christians seem to do regardless of falling away? And in that case, you were the ones you critisize for being a "fake" christian?

I think you need to watch this outstanding video series by a former born-again Christian speaking about his process towards deconversion. It's done very tastefully and respectfully towards his former faith, but chronicles exactly what revelations and thought processes he went through towards his path to atheism.

I think this is a valuable series for Christians and atheists alike to watch, Christians so that they can understand how someone can deeply and honestly believe in their Christian faith and still come to eventually reject it, and atheists so that they can stop presuming the arrogant stance that people of faith are deluded and unintelligent.
