Ridge Black

What are those ridge things on the rear windows of some cars (mostly sports cars of the 70s/80s)?

They're usually black or body color I think. I think they're made of plastic. They make different levels like stairs or something. I think I've seen them on Porsches and in pictures of Lancia Stratoses (I've never seen a Stratos in person). What are they, and what purpose do they serve?

window louvers. they are good for shade? something to loosen up and rub your paint? im sure some engineer had an aerodynamic explination when he invented them.
