Why is that when we drop a glass jar it breaks but when we keep it on a table at rest it doesnt?

I know my question sounds ultra silly but only the same amount of force F=m(g=9.8 ms^2) acts on the jar in both the cases...Or have I missed something obviously?

The answer is in your question - you are "dropping" it urself
See, that the forces are equal both on ground and on the table.
but whewn it falls, the force causes some acceleration, which in turn causes it to have some velocity, which causes it to have some momentum

when it comes in contact of your ground, the G-Force remains, ofcourse, the same
but the momentum it built up will suddenly be reversed(using principles of collisions), and that rate of change of momentum is a force greater than what the bonding forces of the glass atoms (and molecules) can bear(you can also see it like the force is great enough to overcome the tensile strength of the material)

thus, the glass breaks
