How archers shot fire on their arrows / bolts - Please help?

I really need help for a project please.

In the medieval era I need to know how archers were able to shoot arrows that had fire on them. (for example, to ignite an oil field or to burn houses, etc.)

Did they just dip them in some form of oil? Did they wrap them in cloth first?

Any help (based upon facts only please) are very very much appreciated.
