In the Empire Strikes Back, why does Vader save Chewbacca's life?

In Star Wars V, the Empire Strikes Back, there is a scene in which the bounty hunter Boba Fett, Darth Vader and Lando Callrisian are watching Han Solo being prepared for carbon freezing and transport to Jabba the Hutt. At the start of the scene, Chewbacca becomes violent and starts attacking storm troopers, throwing them aside and generally causing trouble. Boba Fett levels his gun to kill Chewbacca but Vader lowers the bounty hunter's weapon before he can fire. Why? Does Darth have a soft spot for Wookies? The shot has a certain degree of poignancy and I wonder if Lucas was trying to say something about either a) Darth's character or b) some historical reference between Darth and Chewbacca which isn't covered in the films but might be apparent in the books etc.

In "Revenge of the Sith" you find out that Yoda is a good friend to the Wookies. If you read the books, you discover that Darth Vader is still very close with his old life as Anakin Skywalker. Although Anakin never met Chewbacca in "Revenge of the Sith" and probably doesn't even know that Chewbacca was there, watching Chewbacca being killed may feel like he is betraying the Jedi more than he already has.

It is also possible that Darth Vader just wanted to avoid unnecessary violence that would possibly harm him and damage the machine.
