bear Bow Arrow speed help?
i have a Bear Bow and my arrow speed is about 276 fps i am using the beman 9.3 400 if i switched to a easton fatboy 500 would it reduce my arrow speed i think im drawing between 50 and 60 pounds
Optimum weight for a Hunting arrow has been calculated as being between 8 and 12 grains per pound of bow draw-weight (at the archer's draw-length - and this is different for each archer). Your arrows should weigh between 400 and 600 grains, for a 50-lb draw; between 480 and 720 grains, for the 60-lb draw. This is IF the draw-weight is either 50 pounds or 60 pounds when you are at full draw, not somewhere between 50 and 60. You have some figuring to do.
Look at it this way: A properly balanced arrow, weighing the correct amount of grains-per-bow poundage to achieve enough momentum to provide adequate penetration in the target animal, will be able to achieve that penetration even at a "slow" speed of 190 fps. That's 129.5 miles per hour. At an "average" hunting distance of 30 yards, that arrow will reach the target in .473 second.
With a speed of 276 fps, or 188 mph, it will reach the same target in .326 second. That's a difference of .147 second -- not nearly enough to make any difference at all, since the deer (or bear, or elk, or...) will be able to hear a noisy bowstring and/or arrow anyway, and a deer's (or bear's, or elk's, or... reflexes are much faster than any arrow. Plus, a miss at 276 fps is the same as a miss at 190 fps -- the arrows misses the intended target (and there is no meat in the freezer).
Make sure your arrows are properly made -- grains weight, balance, length, broadhead design, etc -- and make sure you can put those arrows where they need to be on the first shot.
Penetration and accuracy are what count most. Not "ultra-sonic" speed.
