How do I help a baby robin who has been hurt in my backyard?
I heard a pannicked chirping in my cedar hedge this afternoon and when I went to investigate found a GIANT garter snake (at least 30" long) eating a baby robin in a nest in my hedge.
With the kids watching I just didn't feel I could let nature take its course here so one of the kids sprayed the snake with water (poking it didn't do the trick and I didn't want to hurt the snake either). Both snake and robin came out of the hedge and the snake left. Now I had this tiny little bird with only a few feathers, to deal with. I didn't want to put it back in the hedge because the snake would just come back.
I put it, nest and all, into a hanging planter and, hung it up on a different part of the hedge in the shade. The parents were nearby but haven't been returning this evening. I brought it in to keep it warm and gave it a little softened organic dog food and warm water. What should I do? He is not chirping - should I feed him? How often? Should I keep it inside/out at night??
I would usually suggest returning the chick to the nest and letting the parents continue to care for it...but under the circumstances..the snake will come back. It probably already ate the other chicks as there are usually more than just one in a clutch. The parents should still care for the remaining chick if the nest is close to the original location, (the hanging plant idea sounds good) although the snake may also find this new location. You have two choices..put the nest back out in the hanging plant in the morning and watch from afar for the parents to come and feed, and hope for the best (that the snake does not come back), or take the bird to a wildlife rehabilitator. Look for one near you here:
