Archery: straight arm?

Whenever I hold my arm straight my elbow sticks out to the right (in front of the string line). The string hits my arm every time, even when I'm wearing a protector. It seems no matter how I hold the bow it I'll keep hitting my arm because my elbow is in the way.

Does anyone else have this problem with their arm sticking out? Is it normal?

It's a matter of training the muscles that is responsible for rotating that arm. I don't have that problem, but I've trained quite a few people that do. The first thing to do is to do a quick fix, so that you don't develop other bad habits such as whipping the bow arm away or holding the bow the wrong way, these can develop as you unconciously try to not get hit. The quick fix as the poster above said is to bend the bow arm slightly at the elbow. Bend it such that the bend goes horizontal, I've seen someone that can bend the elbow vertically.

Now, that's the quick fix. Here's the real fix, this will take time. Take that bow arm, and hold on to the side of a door or other surfaces that is both narrow and solid. Lean against the arm, and try to rotate that elbow without rotating the hand or the shoulder. There's a muscle right around your lat area responsible for this movement. You need to wake it up. Watch your bow shoulder to make sure it doesn't move while you're rotating the elbow. The goal, also as Searching for friend pointed out, is to get the joint of the bow elbow to be vertical. To illustrate how it should be, bend the bow elbow such that the hand is on your chest and the elbow is pointed at the target. Now open that elbow up and straighten it without locking, this is the proper position.
