Do I really need to disconnect neg batttery cable when installing new car receiver?

I was just curious, what are the risk that something may short if I don't disconnect negative cable from my car battery when installing new receiver. If I connect all the wires before hand and just plug in the factory connectors to aftermarket connectors, and slide new receiver into the dash what could really happen?

Professional installers never disconnect the battery for a head unit installation. If you're wiring your harness on the test bench, and just plugging it in, then the chance of a short circuit is negligible. If you're just connecting to the factory radio plug, then even if you do short a wire (pinching it when you slide the deck into the opening, for example) then the worst that's likely to happen is a blown fuse in the vehicle fuse box.

I'll disconnect the negative battery terminal during an installation only in three cases:

1. If I'm going to be connecting an amplifier wire to the positive battery terminal, I'll usually disconnect the negative terminal first.
2. If I'm going to be unplugging an airbag component (for example, the passenger airbag indicator light found on the dash in many vehicles) I might disconnect the battery to avoid triggering a trouble code.
3. If I'm working with ignition harness wiring, during a remote starter install; and it's routed close to the metal dash structure, then I might disconnect the battery to avoid blowing a maxi fuse or fusible link.

Otherwise, for just about any installation, I'll leave the battery connected. (For one thing, if you disconnect the battery, you can't adjust powered seats or windows, or test various wire functions).
