What type of archery arrow is best?

Best for what application? Arrow that is best for Hunting is not good for target shooting, and vice versa.

For just shooting indoors, at short distances, I'd recommend aluminum with feathers. Cheap, durable, it does bend and dent, but as long as you stick with a 14/1000" wall thickness and above you'll be fine. Feathers are very forgiving fletching, the downside is it has a lot of drag.

Carbon arrows are tough, or some of them are tough, they either break or they're good, there's no in between. Downside to carbon, you gotta watch for those hairline cracks. Carbons are also expensive, and their straightness tolerance is nowhere near aluminum. You need to buy some very expensive carbon to get spine and straightness tolerance in the vicinity of aluminum arrows. Carbon is also harder to work with, can't put too much heat on the shaft or you risk damaging it. You can put more heat on aluminum shaft with no risk of damage. Some Carbon Shaft like the Gold Tip also need to be scoured on the inside before you apply the point or the point will come loose.

Wood arrows, are pretty. But they're very heavy for a given spine and they don't last as long as either aluminum or carbon. They're the cheapest shaft you can get though.

As for brand, I like Easton, although I'm now using Carbon Express and loving it. For the ultimate long range target arrows, try out the Carbon Express Nano XR or its big brother the Nano Pro. Thin and heavy, these arrows are as wind resistant as they come. Their spine tolerance is unmatched, I've shot 12 arrows with no fletching from 70m and they all group on the target.

For outdoors, target shooting, the spin wing is still the most preferred fletching.
