Comments on broadheads. fixed or mechanical?
I shoot spit fire 100gr. I am looking to switch to the new 2 blade rage. Is the rage better for a quarterin shot?
I hunt with a Fixed Blade, and aways have. I killed lot of deer, and 2 bear with fixed. I like fixed.
BUT my Hunting partner uses 100 grain spitfires, and I have personally eaten deer that he killed on a quarter away shot. He has used spitfires for years, has killed deer in CT and in Maine. He has never had one fail.
2 years ago when he shot a quarter in shot, the entrance wound only showed 2 cuts that would indicate one blade did not open on the pelt, but the lung he went through had all 3 cuts. I guess that on initial impact one may be slow to open or not open, but within a very short drive in the flesh, they open.
Each year I spin broad heads, paper tune my bow, and practice on a Broad Head target with broad heads to make sure they fly right.
My partner simply shoots at deer with a spitfire, and his arrows fly like field points. If your Bow shoots spitfires well, and you are not planning to hunt boar or bear, stick to the spitfires.
I worked in a bow pro shop for 15 years. I always used Muzzy 90 grain broad heads because I hunted Deer as well as Black bear. For thin skin, the tough stuff is not necessary.
