Mini Max

It is known that (a, f(a)) is a max or mini for f (x).......?

It is known that (a, f(a)) is a max or mini for f (x). Explain how to use slope of tngent lines to determine whether point is max or min

The first derivative test:

------(-)--------(a)----(+)-----
decreasing.......0......increasing. This pattern shows a minimum at a

-------(+)-------(a)-----(-)----
Increasing.........0.......decreasing. This pattern shows a maximum at a

So test the derivative at one value of x just to the left of a, and one just to the right of a.
If the function is increasing before, then decreasing, then you have a max.
If decreasing, then increasing, you have a min.
